Isan Weaving (Nong Khai, Thailand)

More than twenty years ago in northeastern Thailand, the Good Shepherd Sisters recognized that weaving, an ancient cultural art that had been lost during centuries of political instability, might be an ideal economic alternative for women in the region facing extreme poverty. Today, the Isan weaving project allows women to remain in their villages and support their families, instead of relocating to the city in search of work. Through this project dozens of women are attaining self-sufficiency and learning new skills while contributing to the economic growth of their local community. Although the region is still faced with poverty and increases in HIV/AIDS, hope is nevertheless alive in Nongkhai through FTU.
